What is phantom mountain crystal?
Phantom rock crystal forms when the growth of a quartz crystal is temporarily interrupted during its formation. Minerals or other microscopic components can deposit on the existing crystal. When the crystal subsequently continues to grow, the earlier growth phase is, as it were, trapped within the new crystal.
As a result, contours may remain visible internally that follow the shape of an earlier growth stage. These structures are phantoms .
Each phantom thus tells a piece of the natural growth history of the crystal. The position, color, shape, and visibility of the phantoms vary from specimen to specimen.
