Instruments for sound, rhythm, and meditation
At TimmersGems, you will find musical instruments where sound, rhythm, and resonance take center stage. The collection consists of various instruments for meditation, sound sessions, rituals, and creative use. Singing bowls, shaman drums, and ocean drums, in particular, each have their own unique playing style and a clearly recognizable sound.
Singing bowls and resonance
Singing bowls produce sound because the wall and rim of the bowl vibrate. Striking a bowl or moving a mallet along the rim creates a long-sustaining tone with various overtones. Material, size, and wall thickness influence how deeply and long the sound continues to resonate.
Traditional metal versions are made in Nepal, among other places. For instance, Nepalese singing bowls sound with mantras and Buddhist imagery. Additionally, there are crystal singing bowls made of quartz, which are known for their clear and long-sustaining tone.
Shaman drum and rhythm
A shaman drum consists of a round frame over which a skin is stretched tightly. Striking the skin with a drumstick produces a deep and rhythmic sound. The diameter of the drum, the tension of the skin, and the material used all contribute to determining how deep or bright the sound is.
An example is a shaman drum with shaved animal skin. In addition to shaman drums, within drums and djembés you will also find other percussion instruments where rhythm is central.
How does an ocean drum work?
An ocean drum works differently from a traditional drum. Inside the instrument are small, loose elements that move across the head when the drum is slowly tilted. This creates a rustling sound reminiscent of waves and moving seawater.
The way an ocean drum is moved strongly influences the sound. Tilting slowly creates a calm and gradual wave sound, while moving faster produces a more powerful noise. Size also plays a role: a larger ocean drum gives the loose contents more room to move and can therefore produce a fuller sound.
Combining different sounds
Singing bowls primarily produce long, resonant tones, while a shaman drum provides a clear rhythm and an ocean drum mimics a flowing natural sound. As a result, these instruments can be used individually, but also combined during meditation or a sound session. Wind chimes can also add an extra layer of sound.
