Sourced from the famous La Bolsa mines

La Bolsa is located in the Los Catalanes gemmological district in the Artigas department, in the far north of Uruguay. This area is one of the most important amethyst regions in the world. The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) has even listed the Los Catalanes amethyst deposits as important geological heritage and describes the area as a world-class site with exceptional concentrations of large amethyst geodes.

La Bolsa itself is a well-known mining location within this area. Official Uruguayan documentation already names La Bolsa as an important area for the extraction of agate, amethyst, and quartz. Mineralogical documentation also specifically mentions high-quality amethyst and calcite finds from the La Bolsa Quarry.

How were the amethyst geodes of Artigas formed?

The famous amethysts of Artigas formed in volcanic rock. The geodes are located in ancient lava flows associated with the massive volcanic Paraná-Etendeka system from the Early Cretaceous. Volcanic activity in this region took place approximately 138 to 128 million years ago .

Minerals were later able to crystallize in cavities within the basalt. Scientific research into the geodes of Artigas reveals a characteristic sequence in which agatewas formed first, followed by quartz, and finally amethyst. This explains why, in spectacular specimens like this one, the amethyst is surrounded by a beautiful natural agate rim.

Beautiful polished agate rim

One of the most striking features of this specimen is the broad polished agate rim surrounding the crystal cavity. Polishing makes the natural bands, color transitions, and patterns of the agate much more clearly visible.

The result is a fascinating transition from the dark natural exterior, through the light and dark agate layers, to the crystalline interior. It is precisely this combination that makes the piece interesting from every angle.

Moreover, the polished edge gives the amethyst a luxurious appearance that is perfectly suited to high-end interior projects.

Deep purple Uruguayan amethyst

Amethyst from Artigas is internationally known for its high-quality crystals. The deposits of Los Catalanes are special due to their high quality, variety of shapes, and the presence of exceptionally large geodes.

In this specimen, the intense crystal cavity forms the central focal point. Dozens of individual crystal points catch the light in different ways, causing the amethyst to take on a different appearance depending on the lighting.

Black metal rotating stand of 45 cm

For a mineral weighing nearly 95 kilograms, a good presentation is essential. Therefore, this amethyst is placed on a robust black metal stand with a diameter of approximately 45 cm.

A unique feature is that the stand rotatable . This allows the amethyst to be rotated and viewed from different directions or placed precisely in the desired position.

The black, minimalist design of the stand deliberately forms a calm contrast with the exuberant natural shapes and colors of the mineral.

A nature artwork 1.07 meters high

Including the stand, this spectacular object reaches a height of no less than 107 cm. This makes it large enough to be displayed on the floor on its own.

The piece comes into its own particularly well in a luxury living room, entrance, office, hotel, restaurant, wellness center, showroom, or reception area. This is also an exceptional object for interior architects and designers looking for a unique, natural statement piece.

No painting, sculpture, or art object can be exactly replicated like this amethyst: nature formed this specimen only once.
