Description
Museum piece Calcite with Aragonite from the Wenshan mines, Yunnan, China – 70 kg
An impressive, museum-quality natural artwork originating from the famous Wenshan mines in Yunnan Province, China. This exceptional specimen of Calcite with Aragonite combines a fascinating geological history with a sculptural beauty that appears to come straight from a natural history museum. Measuring 38 x 29 x 89 cm, weighing 70 kilograms , and mounted on a beautiful rosewood base, this piece serves as an exclusive eye-catcher for collectors, galleries, luxury interiors, and museum presentations.
A geological masterpiece from the mountains of Wenshan
This exceptional specimen displays a rare natural process in which calcite has deposited upon pre-existing aragonite stalactites. The result is a spectacular combination of flowing forms, whimsical structures, and refined mineral growth. The organic shapes are reminiscent of solidified waterfalls or frozen mineral streams. It appears as if the calcite flowed over the aragonite stalactites as a liquid mass and subsequently solidified millions of years ago. This unique formation makes each specimen entirely unique and creates an almost surreal appearance.
Formed deep in the mountains of Yunnan
Deep within the mountainous regions of Wenshan, exceptional mineral structures have developed over long geological periods. Under the influence of mineral-rich solutions, aragonite stalactites formed, upon which rich deposits of calcite later developed. The result is a natural sculpture that impressively reveals the power and creativity of geological processes.
Sourced from the famous Wenshan mines
The Wenshan mine is a zinc mine that produces aragonite and, less frequently, hemimorphite of predominantly blue and white color, and even more rarely in green shades. The region gained international renown for its world-class deep blue hemimorphite specimens with an exceptionally fine surface growth strongly reminiscent of okenite. To date, only two significant specimens of this famous quality have become known: one discovered around 1990/1991 and a second in 1999. Although these hemimorphites have become very famous, the Wenshan region has also produced some of China's most spectacular calcite specimens.
A combination of Calcite and Aragonite
The combination of calcite and aragonite is one of the most fascinating phenomena in the mineral world. Both minerals consist of calcium carbonate, but crystallize in entirely different ways. This creates a beautiful contrast between the graceful, organic aragonite structures and the flowing deposits of calcite. This specimen displays this natural collaboration in an exceptionally beautiful manner.
Placed on an elegant rosewood base
To allow the beauty of this exceptional piece to be fully appreciated, it has been placed on a high-quality rosewood base. The warm wood tones form a beautiful contrast with the light mineral textures and enhance the museum-quality appearance of the whole. This creates a presentation that is both stylish and timeless.
A museum-quality eye-catcher
With a height of nearly 90 cm, this specimen has an impressive vertical presence. The sculptural form, the rich details, and the unique history of creation make it a piece that fascinates both scientifically and aesthetically.
