Description
The mineral petalite is a lithium-aluminum tectosilicate with the chemical formula LiAlSi4O10. It belongs to the feldspar group. This colorless, gray or whitish-yellow mineral has a monoclinic crystal system and perfect cleavage. Its average density is 2.42 and its hardness is 6 to 6.5. Petalite is neither radioactive nor magnetic. The name petalite is derived from the Greek word petalon, meaning "leaf." It was so named because of its leaf-like cleavage. Like many lithium-bearing minerals, petalite can often be found in granitic pegmatites. The type locality is the Mining Academy in Freiberg, Germany.
