Description
Shambhala, also spelled Shambala or Shamballa, is a mythical kingdom. In texts related to the Kalachakratantra, it is located north of the Himalayas, usually associated with Tibet. The Bon religion also mentions a mythical realm called Olmolungring, which is said to have been ruled by the founder of that religion, Tonpa Shenrab. Traditionally, Shambhala is a land dedicated to the practice of the Kalachakratantra. The tantra states that the historical Buddha entrusted this to the king of the land. Shambhala is shaped like an enormous lotus flower. It boasts vast sandalwood forests, lotus-shaped lakes, and is surrounded by a mountain range. At the center of the kingdom lies the capital, Kalāpa. At the center of the city lies the mandala of the Buddha Kalachakra. The inhabitants of Shambhala's 960 million villages are governed by the Kalkin, an exceptionally wise ruler. The laity in Shambhala are all beautiful and healthy people; there is no sickness or poverty. The monks fulfill their vows and obligations in an exemplary manner. They are intelligent, completely dedicated to the practice of Vajrayana, although all authentic forms of Indian Buddhism are also preserved there. The majority of those reborn in Shambhala attain Buddhahood during their lifetime there. But serious difficulties loom. In the year 2425, the barbarians (generally identified as Muslims) who have destroyed Buddhism in India will attempt to invade Shambhala. The twenty-fifth Kalkin, Raudracakrin, will then lead his armies to India, where they will fight the forces of evil in an apocalyptic battle, which will be won by the forces of Buddhism. This victory will result in a golden age in which life expectancy will increase dramatically, harvests will be possible without tilling the land, and the entire world's population will be devoted to Buddhism.
