Description
The Kama Sutra is considered the most important Indian textbook on the art of love. It was compiled by Vatsyayana, probably in the second century CE. It covers many topics of eroticism in detail and in a didactic manner. The book was a guide for (newly) married couples to discover each other and find pleasure in a time when arranged marriages could seriously disrupt romance. It teaches the man to please his wife and thus win her love.
The Kama Sutra contains 36 chapters in seven parts:
Introduction (5 chapters) – on love in general, its place in life, and a classification of types of women.
On sexual union (10 chapters) – an in-depth treatise on various sexual techniques, from kissing through foreplay to orgasm, as well as sexual positions and threesomes, among others.
On how to get a woman (5 chapters) – courtship and marriage.
On a wife (2 chapters) – how she behaves.
On other people's wives (6 chapters) – on seduction.
On courtesans (6 chapters).
On ways to make oneself attractive to others (2 chapters).
