Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is a polymer of methyl methacrylate. This transparent thermoplastic is better known by the trade names Perspex, Plexiglas, Altuglas, and Oroglas, but also simply as acrylic. Polymethyl methacrylate transmits approximately ninety percent of light and is therefore often used as a replacement for glass, offering several advantages: it is lighter; it does not shatter; it is easy to produce in various shapes; and it transmits more light than regular glass. PMMA is used in applications where its significant weight savings compared to glass are a significant advantage and also where high transparency is required. For example, in caravan windows or large aquariums—the world's largest aquariums have windows several meters wide and high and up to 30 cm thick, made of PMMA. They can also be manufactured in sections and bonded together almost invisibly for assembly. Furthermore, PMMA is a commonly used material for transparent noise barriers. PMMA is less commonly used for safety applications; it is less impact-resistant (though better than glass), and it breaks into sharp fragments. Nowadays, some PMMA grades are quite impact-resistant. Moreover, it is highly flammable, so it can never be used in passenger transport (trains, trams, buses). For these, unbreakable, high-temperature-resistant, and self-extinguishing polycarbonate is used, which is roughly the same price. PMMA was also used for the first implantable lenses in ophthalmology.
