Qigong (pronounced: chee ghong) is a branch of Chinese medicine that is learned to maintain and improve physical and mental health. Qigong exercises are usually self-contained exercises in which one moves body parts according to a prescribed pattern, repeating these movements several times before moving on to the next movement. A Qigong exercise can also be static, where a standing or sitting position is held for an extended period. Furthermore, emphasis is placed on breathing exercises. Repetitive movement and correct breathing are believed to positively influence the flow of Qi (life energy) in the body. Each body part (with an emphasis on internal organs) is considered to have a certain amount of Qi. The Qi in all body parts, when healthy, is balanced. By performing Qigong exercises, one attempts to maintain or restore this balance. Aikman wrote that unlike the West, where many believe qigong is a subjective, New Age-like concept that cannot be scientifically verified, much of China's scientific establishment has acknowledged the existence of qi. Controlled experiments by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the late 1970s and early 1980s concluded that qi, when emitted by a qigong expert, "results in actually measurable infrared electromagnetic waves and causes chemical changes in still water through mental concentration." Reproducible beneficial effects of qigong on heart rate and the immune system have been recorded. (Lee 2005)
