Her name is also written as Quan Yin, Quan'Am, Kannon, or Kannin. She is the personification of compassion and kindness and hears the cries of every being. Kuan Yin is also called the Goddess of Mercy. She is a virgin goddess who protects women, she is the patroness of the sea, she helps those who ask for her help, and she hears every prayer. It is a historical fact that Kuan Yin is the Chinese version of the male god Avalokiteshvara. In China, her worship began as a male god, but over time this shifted from god to goddess, and by the ninth century, her popularity surpassed that of Avalokiteshvara. In the West, Quan Yin is increasingly seen as a Chinese Mother Mary.
