Description
A totem is a natural or supernatural object, being, or animal that has personal symbolic meaning for an individual and to whose phenomena and energy one feels a strong connection. The word "totem" is of Native American origin; it derives from the Algonquian word odoodem, meaning "family sign." Among the Anishinaabeg of the American Great Lakes region, for example, one is born into the totem clan of one's father, who is represented by an animal, bird, or fish. However, totems are found not only in America but also among the Siberian peoples from whom Native Americans descend. A simplified dramatic example of this belief in practice is the Walt Disney film "Brother Bear." In the film, a boy from a proto-Inuit tribe receives a totem of the Bear, which represents love. Although he initially rejects it, by the end of the story he proves to have achieved more ideals than anyone thought possible.
