Description
The hang is a percussion instrument consisting of two spherical steel plates perfectly stacked on top of each other. The instrument can be played with the hands while placed between the legs or on the lap. The hang was introduced in 2000 in Bern, Switzerland. In the Bernese dialect, "hang" refers to the hand. The hang was developed thanks to the Swiss metal percussion instrument manufacturer PANart, following extensive research conducted by Sabina Schärer and Felix Rohner. The research explored the Trinidad and Tobago steel drum, as well as various other percussion instruments such as the gong, gamelan, drum, bell, and ghatam. At the center of the instrument is a low note, also called a "ding," surrounded by seven to eight harmonic tones. Through various hand and finger techniques, one can create a captivating rhythmic melody in this way. The instrument has a diameter of 58 cm and is lovingly crafted by skilled artisans. Although simple in design, it produces a remarkably harmonious sound, reminiscent of the serene melodies of Buddha. Even those new to music can easily learn and perform beautiful melodies. It is ideal for teaching children music, allowing them to play effortlessly and without boredom.
