Description
Duck is the common name for several species of birds in the Anatidae family. All Anatidae species are called "ducks," except for those in the subfamily Anserinae, the geese and swans. Ducks are primarily aquatic birds, usually smaller than their relatives, the swans and geese, with shorter necks, and can be found in both fresh and salt water. The Tadorninae, which includes the shelduck, are intermediate in size between a goose and a duck. Ducks are sometimes confused with several unrelated species of birds with similar shapes, such as divers, grebes, rails, coots, and moorhens. Sometimes, "duck" refers only to female ducks. A male duck is called a "drake." A young duck is called a "piel" (a duck with peels swims). In general, young chickens and ducks are also called "pulletje" or "pulleke." A mallard drake, the most common species, can be recognized not only by its color but also by some curled feathers on its tail (this is not always visible).
