Each day features a beautifully cut gemstone, and the 24 days leading up to Christmas create a beautiful collection of 24 gemstones, each individually labeled with a name. An Advent calendar is part of a Christian tradition dating back to the 19th century, Advent. The calendar contains several compartments, one of which can be opened each day. Usually, the compartments contain chocolate or another treat for children. There are also calendars geared more towards adults, often featuring sayings or photos. The calendar makes it fun to count down the days to Christmas. The calendars are produced in many different shapes and sizes. All calendars have in common that they count down the remaining days until Christmas, usually 24. In this sense, the Advent calendar serves the same function as the Advent wreath. The countdown often begins on December 1st, but it can also be on other dates between November 27th and December 3rd. There are always at least four Sundays in the Advent season. In Christianity, Advent is the term for the period leading up to Christmas. The name Advent comes from the Latin word adventus, meaning "coming." During Advent, Christians prepare for Christmas and commemorate the birth and return of Jesus. Advent originated in Germany and Luther, which explains why you can still find so many different Advent calendars in Germany and Austria. In recent years, the Advent calendar has spread to a large number of Christian countries, but increasingly also to a number of non-Christian countries.
