Description
Pyrite suns (Pyrite dollars) from Sparta, Illinois, USA.
One of the most extraordinary and sought-after fossil minerals from the United States: Pyrite Suns, also Pyrite Dollars . These natural discs of pyrite formed millions of years ago in the black shale layers of Sparta, Illinois (USA) and are currently among the most sought-after collectibles among mineral and fossil enthusiasts.
This exceptional specimen contains two pyrite suns in the original host rock, a combination that has become extremely rare today.
A natural phenomenon that occurs nowhere else
Pyrite suns are not ordinary pyrite crystals. They formed millions of years ago when pyrite deposited in thin, disc-shaped structures between layers of black shale. After the rock layers split, these beautiful round formations with their characteristic ray pattern appeared, giving them the name Pyrite Sun.
Due to their round shape, they are also internationally known as Pyrite Dollars .
Originally from Sparta, Illinois
The famous deposits near Sparta in the American state of Illinois have been yielding the most beautiful Pyrite Suns in the world for decades. The black shale forms a beautiful contrast with the golden pyrite, making every find a small work of natural art.
However, the sites are limited and the available material becomes scarcer every year.
Increasingly difficult to obtain
During our annual purchasing trip to the world-famous mineral fair in Tucson (Arizona), we go in search of the most beautiful Pyrite suns year after year.
Whereas four or five exhibitors used to offer this special material, nowadays only one supplier remains. Anyone who is not present three or four days before the official opening of the fair runs a high risk of missing out completely.
That makes it clear how scarce these special finds have become by now.
Only 130 copies available in 2025
The supplier told us that he had only 130 units available for the entirety of 2025 :
- 77 specimens with one pyrite sun
- 53 specimens with two pyrite suns in the parent rock
We immediately managed to purchase 12 examples of both versions. As a result, we have a very limited stock of these special American classics
A unique collector's item
The specimens with two fully developed pyrite suns are particularly sought after. The natural contrast between the golden pyrite and the deep black shale makes each piece unique.
No two pyrite suns are the same. The size, ray pattern, and shape vary from specimen to specimen, giving each find its own character.
