What is a desert rose?
A desert rose is a natural crystal formation that usually consists of gypsum, often in the form of selenite, in which sand particles are embedded.
Evaporation of mineral-rich groundwater can cause flat crystals to form that grow into one another. This creates shapes that strongly resemble the petals of a rose.
The sand grains from the surroundings are incorporated during crystal growth, giving the desert rose its characteristic beige, sandy brown to light brown color.
