A beautiful, heavy classical Thai seated Buddha in bronze, executed in one of the most famous postures in Buddhist art: Mara Vijaya, also known as the Bhumisparsha mudra , or “calling upon the earth as witness”.
The statue weighs no less than 1,695 grams and measures approximately 260 × 150 × 80 mm. The beautiful traditional design, serene facial expression, and warm radiance of the bronze make this Buddha a particularly decorative and spiritual object.

Mara Vijaya – the earth as witness
The posture of this Buddha has significant meaning within Buddhism. The left hand rests in the lap with the palm facing upwards, while the right hand points downwards over the right knee.
This posture refers to an important moment in the life story of Siddhartha Gautama. While meditating under the Bodhi tree and confronted by Mara, he touched the earth with his right hand and called upon the earth as a witness.
The posture therefore symbolizes the moment preceding his enlightenment and the attainment of Buddhahood.
Bhumisparsha-mudra
The Sanskrit name Bhumisparsha can be translated as “touching the earth”. It is one of the most recognizable mudras in Buddhist sculpture.
The attitude is often associated with steadfastness, victory over temptation and ignorance, and the attainment of enlightenment.
Precisely because of this powerful symbolism, the Bhumisparsha Buddha is a beloved image for meditation rooms, spiritual spaces, and Buddhist-inspired interiors.
Classic Thai design
In terms of design, this statue is clearly inspired by the classical Thai Buddhist tradition. Several characteristic elements are immediately recognizable.
The elegant flame-shaped crowning on top of the head, the small stylized locks of hair, long earlobes, slender body shape, and serene facial expression align with stylistic elements known from the Sukhothai and later Ayutthaya traditions.
The Sukhothai period had a particularly significant influence on the development of the classical Thai Buddha statue. The refined, serene faces and elegant body forms developed during this period remained important sources of inspiration for Thai sculptors in later centuries as well.
No unfounded ancient dating
Although the design clearly harks back to historical Thai styles, this does not automatically mean that the statue itself dates from the Sukhothai or Ayutthaya period.
Buddha statues in this traditional style were also produced during the 19th and 20th centuries and later . Without additional research into, among other things, casting technique, patina, material, documentation, and provenance, an exact antique dating would therefore not be justified.
That does not detract from the appearance of the statue: it is a beautiful bronze Buddha executed according to an ancient Thai sculptural tradition.
