What is an ammonite?
Ammonites were marine animals belonging to the cephalopods. They were related to the modern nautilus, squid, and octopus, among others.
Their shell was divided into several chambers. As the animal grew, new and larger chambers were formed. This chamber structure is often beautifully visible in a serrated ammonite.
Ammonites existed in the world's oceans for a very long period and became extinct approximately 66 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous.
