Description
Amethyst with Pyrite Overgrowth – Jacuí, Soledade, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil – 1703 grams
A rare mineral from a vanished mine
This exceptional specimen of amethyst with pyrite overgrowth originates from Jacuí, near Soledade in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. It is a fascinating composite piece in which the original amethyst crystals were later covered by a fine layer of pyrite crystals, resulting in an exceptionally shimmering surface.
Such pieces are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain nowadays. The mine from which this material originates was closed around 1985. Nevertheless, fine specimens still occasionally surface from old collections and historical stocks.
A magnificent natural overgrowth
What makes this specimen so special is the fine pyrite layer that covers virtually the entire surface. This creates a sparkling, almost silvery sheen that produces thousands of tiny reflections under illumination.
Beautiful light purple amethyst crystals are still visible in various places amidst the pyrite overgrowth, creating an attractive contrast between the soft purple hues and the metallic sparkle of the pyrite.
A geological work of art
This mineral beautifully illustrates how various mineralization processes have followed one another over millions of years. First, the amethyst crystals grew in a volcanic cavity, after which a later phase of mineralization led to the deposition of pyrite on the existing crystal surface.
The result is a specimen with a unique structure, rich texture, and exceptional appearance.
A special addition for collectors
Due to its historical provenance, beautiful crystal formation, and rarity, this specimen is an attractive addition to any high-quality mineral collection. The piece combines aesthetic beauty with geological interest and forms a real eye-catcher in a display cabinet or presentation collection.
