•Several thousand years ago, cowrie shells were used as currency, particularly in Asian and African countries. These shells were found, then and now, in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Their use even continued into the slavery era. It's known, for example, that in the 18th century, 10,000 shells were paid for a good male slave from West Africa. It's hard to believe, but in Nigeria, chickens were still being sold for 25 cowries in 1911. Those shells are a bit of a burden on your wallet, aren't they?.
Cowrie shells ("Cypraea moneta") originate primarily from the Indian Ocean. The cowrie is on average about two and a half centimeters long and looks almost like porcelain. The inhabitants of these shells are therefore called porcelain snails. Cowrie shells were initially used as a means of exchange in the Maldives and Sri Lanka. This practice spread from there to India and much of Africa, even to Suriname and Dutch New Guinea. The scientific name of the shell contains the word "moneta," which refers to the Latin word for "money." This indicates that the shell was used as currency when it received its name. Maldivian fishermen sold cowrie shells to the Dutch East India Company (VOC).
