Description
Museum-quality Calcite with Aragonite on Rosewood Base – Museum Piece from Wenshan, China
This spectacular specimen of Calcite with Aragonite is undoubtedly one of the most impressive minerals originating from China. Weighing no less than 1,260 kilograms and measuring approximately 215 x 80 x 80 cm, this is a true museum piece that immediately commands all attention. The combination of size, aesthetics, rarity, and presentation makes this an exceptional object for museums, galleries, exclusive collections, and prestigious spaces.
The piece consists of calcite that has grown on top of natural aragonite stalactites, formed deep in the mountains of Wenshan during millions of years of geological activity. This particular growth form has resulted in a fascinating interplay of structures, textures, and crystal forms that is only rarely found in this quality and magnitude.
The mineral is placed on a specially crafted, handmade rosewood base. This high-quality base can be removed if desired, but forms an integral part of the presentation. The warm appearance of the rosewood contrasts beautifully with the natural crystal structures and emphasizes the exclusive character of the whole.
Originating from the famous Wenshan region
This impressive specimen comes from the famous Wenshan, Yunnan, China. The so-called Wenshan mine is known among collectors worldwide for the production of special minerals, including aragonite, hemimorphite, and exceptional calcite formations.
The mine is primarily associated with zinc mining and also produces aragonite and sometimes hemimorphite in white, blue, and very rare green varieties. The region gained international fame through some of the most beautiful deep blue hemimorphite specimens ever found. To date, only two specimens of certain world-famous varieties are known.
Although the name “Wenshan Mine” likely refers to one or more deposits in the area around Wenshan, it is certain that this region has produced some of the most spectacular calcite specimens in the world.
An exceptional combination of Calcite and Aragonite
Calcite and aragonite are both natural forms of calcium carbonate, but differ significantly in crystal structure. It is precisely this combination that creates a striking contrast between the underlying stalactitic aragonite structures and the later-formed calcite crystals.
The result is an impressive work of nature artwork that makes millions of years of geological history visible in a single object.
An absolute masterpiece
Due to its monumental dimensions, enormous weight, exceptional quality, and luxurious presentation, this specimen belongs to the absolute top category within the world of minerals. Such pieces are offered only very rarely and are generally reserved for museums, prestigious collections, and major exhibitions.
