Deep in the mountainous regions around Wenshan, extraordinary mineral structures have formed over thousands of years. This specimen beautifully demonstrates how calcite has deposited upon pre-existing aragonite stalactites. The organic forms, undulating structures, and natural layers give the piece an almost surreal appearance. It seems as if the mineral slowly melted and then solidified again on top of the underlying aragonite formations. This unique growth pattern makes every specimen completely unique.
Sourced from the famous Wenshan mines
The Wenshan mine is a zinc mine primarily known for the production of aragonite and, less frequently, hemimorphite in predominantly blue and white colors, and even more rarely in green shades. The region gained international renown for its world-class deep blue hemimorphite specimens with exceptionally fine surface growth strongly reminiscent of okenite. To date, only two famous specimens of this quality have been discovered: one found around 1990/1991 and a second in 1999. Although the Wenshan region has become famous primarily for these rare hemimorphites, it has also produced some of China's most spectacular calcite specimens.
