This particular specimen was formed by an exceptional combination of mineral-forming processes deep within the mountains of Wenshan. The base is formed by aragonite stalactites that developed over a long period in natural cavities within the rock. At a later stage, mineral-rich solutions deposited calcite over these pre-existing structures. As a result, it appears as if the calcite flowed over the aragonite as a liquid mass and was subsequently frozen in time. This natural overgrowth has led to an impressive interplay of organic forms, soft lines, and distinctive textures.

The mountainous region around Wenshan is one of the most mineral-rich areas of China. Over millions of years, underground processes, mineral-rich solutions, and geological activity have led to the formation of unique minerals and crystal structures here. The region gained international renown thanks to its world-class deep blue hemimorphite specimens with fine surface growth strongly reminiscent of okenite. To date, only two significant specimens of this exceptional quality have become known: one discovered around 1990/1991 and a second in 1999. Although these hemimorphites have become very famous, the Wenshan region has also produced some of the most beautiful calcite and aragonite formations in China.
