As a result, it appears as if the calcite flowed over the aragonite like a liquid stream and was subsequently frozen in time. Over thousands to millions of years, underground processes have created this unique natural artwork. The original aragonite stalactites grew slowly in natural cavities, after which calcite deposited as a protective and decorative overgrowth. The Wenshan mine is a zinc mine that produces aragonite and, less frequently, hemimorphite of predominantly blue and white color, and even more rarely in green shades. The region gained international renown for its world-class deep blue hemimorphite specimens with exceptionally fine surface growth strongly reminiscent of okenite. To date, only two significant specimens of this famous quality have become known: one discovered around 1990/1991 and a second in 1999. Although these hemimorphites are prized worldwide, the Wenshan region has also produced some of the most spectacular calcite and aragonite formations ever found in China.
