Exceptionally large pyrite crystals

What immediately distinguishes this specimen are the very large and powerfully developed pyrite crystals. Pyrite is known for its geometric crystal forms. In high-quality Peruvian specimens, the crystals can be exceptionally sharply formed, with clean faces and an intense metallic luster. On this piece, large crystals and smaller crystal clusters come together, creating a spectacular three-dimensional structure.

Pyrite from Huanzala

The Huanzala mine in Peru is internationally famous among mineral collectors for the exceptional quality of its pyrite.

Pyrite from this site is known for:

  • sharp crystal forms
  • strong metallic luster
  • beautiful crystal groups
  • large crystals
  • high collection quality

Especially large specimens with well-developed crystals belong to the higher segment of the international mineral market.

Purchased directly from the mine owner

During the mineral fair in Munich in 2025, we purchased four exceptional pyrite pieces directly from the Peruvian mine owner Angelo Hernandez. By buying directly from the source, we were able to select specifically based on crystal size, luster, composition, and overall presentation quality. This piece immediately stood out due to the combination of its enormous size and impressive crystals.

Flattened standing base

With a 77-kilogram mineral, proper presentation is essential. The underside has therefore been carefully flattened to form a standing base. This allows the piece to be placed independently and stably without the need for a separate stand. This makes the specimen particularly suitable for a prominent place in a:

  • mineral museum
  • high-quality private collection
  • entrance
  • showroom
  • office
  • boardroom
  • hotel
  • gallery
  • luxury interior

Polished finish

In addition to the natural crystal structure, the piece is meticulously finished. The polished parts and base give the mineral a refined appearance, while the natural pyrite crystals remain the central focus. The contrast between the sleek finish and the rough crystal structure enhances the luxurious look.

What is pyrite?

Pyrite is an iron sulfide with the chemical formula FeS₂.

The mineral is known for its gold- to silvery brass-colored metallic luster. Due to this visual resemblance to gold, pyrite is also fool's gold . Unlike gold, pyrite often forms very distinct geometric crystals, including cubes, pyritohedra, and combinations of various crystal forms.

Why pyrite is so popular among collectors

Pyrite is one of the minerals that are immediately recognizable.

The combination of:

  • metallic sheen
  • geometric crystal shapes
  • sharp crystal faces
  • strong light reflection
  • large crystal groups

makes high-quality pyrite particularly attractive to mineral collectors. Large pieces weighing tens of kilograms with beautiful crystal formation are considerably harder to find than smaller hand specimens.

Impressive weight of 77 kilograms

Weighing 77 kilograms, this specimen is an absolute eye-catcher. Its size allows the crystals to be clearly seen even from a greater distance. At the same time, it remains interesting up close due to the enormous number of facets and natural details. Under focused lighting, a spectacular play of reflections emerges.

A real museum piece

This specimen is intended for the serious collector seeking something exceptional. A pyrite of this size and quality is not only a mineral but also a natural sculpture. The crystals together form a composition created by nature itself. It is therefore highly suitable as a centerpiece within a high-end collection.

Traditional meaning of pyrite

Within traditional gemology, pyrite is often associated with strength, self-confidence, decisiveness, and prosperity. Due to its golden appearance, the mineral is also symbolically linked to wealth and abundance. These meanings are based on gemstone traditions and personal beliefs and have not been scientifically proven to have medicinal effects.
