Reiki is a paranormal therapy and belongs to the alternative healing methods. It is practiced with the hands, treating the body with a supposed form of life energy. The term reiki consists of two Japanese characters (kanji), namely 霊 rei ('spirit' or 'soul') and 気 ki ('energy' or 'life force').[2] Another popular Western translation of 霊気 reiki is "universal life energy," or simply "life," "the world." When applying reiki, body, mind, and soul are viewed as a whole when it comes to illness and healing. Neither the existence of ki nor a mechanism for its manipulation has been scientifically proven. The Japanese Mikao Usui (1865-1926) is the founder of what he himself called "Usui Reiki Ryoho." "Ryoho" is Japanese for "therapy." He originally developed this system as a path to happiness, harmony, and spiritual development. Mikao Usui gave his teachings a more concrete form around 1922, after a long search and a period of fasting and meditation on Mount Kurama.
