Ohm Mudra, also known as the deity gesture, is a mudra in hatha yoga. A mudra (Sanskrit for seal or gesture) is a term that goes back to the classical texts of the Vedas and, in this case, means holding the hand in a certain position, allowing prana to flow through it in a specific way. Mudras are primarily practiced during meditation. In the ohm mudra, the tips of the thumb and index finger touch, forming an "o" shape. Different meanings are attributed to the fingers. The thumb represents divine energy. It symbolizes willpower unconditioned by karma. The index finger is associated with Jupiter and symbolizes the ego and expansion. These energies are believed to be governed by unconscious patterns. The "o" symbolizes the balance between the karma of God and the person in question. The jnana mudra (wisdom mudra) is said to reveal the deity, and the ahamkara mudra (the ego-transcending gesture) reveals individuality. In this mudra, they come together and only life manifests. By constantly practicing the ohm mudra, one is said to become more peaceful, less aggressive, and more at one with oneself.
