Description
The water buffalo has a shoulder height of 1.5 to 1.9 meters and a length of 2.40 to 3 meters. The tail is 60 to 100 centimeters long and bushy at the tip. It has a grey-black, thin coat with long hairs. The lower part of the legs is sometimes pale white up to the knees. Adult animals, however, are almost naked. The skin is dark grey. The bulls have large horns that curve backwards in a crescent shape. The horns have deep grooves and can span up to two meters. The cows are smaller than the bulls. Their horns are also smaller. Adult animals can weigh 300 to 1200 kg; usually, the bulls are heavier than the cows, which can weigh up to approximately 800 kg. As a result of genetic isolation, weight varies greatly depending on the region.
