Traditional Chinese characters form the traditional hanzi character set, which is used in writing Chinese languages. Several characters were modified by the government of the People's Republic of China in the 1950s and 1960s. These have since become simplified Chinese characters. Traditional Chinese characters are used in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and mostly in Cantonese-Chinese communities overseas. In Taiwan, traditional Chinese characters are called Zhengtizi (Tongyong Pinyin: jhèngtǐzìh). The United Nations used traditional characters until the 1970s, when the official Chinese missions moved from Taipei to Beijing; since then, the United Nations has used simplified characters. Traditional Chinese characters have been written for about two thousand years; historical and classical Chinese texts are all written with traditional characters.
