The island serves as the administrative capital of the Raas District, which encompasses several surrounding islands. The Raas cat, an endemic domestic cat breed of Indonesia, is believed to originate from the island. Dreamcatchers, also called dream catchers, originated with the Ojibwe or Chippewa, a Native American tribe of North America. The history of the dreamcatcher is not fully known, but it is known that the original dreamcatcher was made from a flexible branch tied with tendons to form a circle. Feathers were then attached.
