A lantern is a brightly colored lamp used as decoration and to create a festive atmosphere. It can be strung on a garland or carried along to certain celebrations. Children make their own lanterns, which hang on a stick and burn with a candle or battery-powered light, and then go door-to-door with them. In some regions of Flanders and the Netherlands, for example, it's customary to have children make lanterns at school. On November 11th (St. Martin's Day), they go door-to-door singing, begging for candy or small change. In other regions, this happens on January 6th (Epiphany). These lanterns are made by local Vietnamese artisans, whose tradition dates back more than 600 years. The lantern frames are handmade and hand-strung with the finest silk, making them perfect for decorating a room like a bedroom. Our lamps are handmade in Hanoi, in local, small-scale workshops. The material used is 100% natural Vietnamese silk (natural silk from the silkworm is very famous in Asia, think Jim Thompson in Thailand). The silk has beautiful, bright, vibrant colors and features Asian and other symbols. All lamps are handmade with natural materials such as bamboo, natural silk, and certified wood.
Vietnam (Vietnamese: Việt Nam), officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, is a country in Southeast Asia. Located on the Indochina Peninsula, it is bordered by China to the north, the Gulf of Tonkin and the Chinese island of Hainan to the northeast, the South China Sea to the southeast, Cambodia to the southwest, and Laos to the northwest. With 92,477,857 inhabitants (2013), Vietnam is among the fourteen most populous countries in the world. The capital is Hanoi (Hà Nội) in the north, and the largest city is Ho Chi Minh City (Thành Phố Hồ Chí Minh), formerly Saigon, in the south. After more than a thousand years of Chinese rule, Vietnam gained independence in the tenth century. In the centuries that followed, the country expanded southward. In the nineteenth century, Vietnam, along with neighboring Laos and Cambodia, was colonized by France. The French left the colony after the First Indochina War (December 6, 1946, to August 1, 1954), after which Vietnam was divided into a communist northern part and an anti-communist southern part. These two parts continued to fight during the Second Indochina War, better known as the Vietnam War (1957 to 1975), which ultimately led to a North Vietnamese victory and the reunification of the two parts. Since reunification in 1976, Vietnam has been a socialist people's republic. The Communist Party of Vietnam is the sole political party with complete power, although since 1986 the country has been increasingly involved in international diplomacy and the global economy due to political and economic reforms.
