During Native American times, a network of urban areas existed around the Mississippi River. Cahokia (in what is now Illinois) was the principal settlement along the river for centuries. Although Europeans left the area untouched for a long time, the population was decimated by imported diseases such as smallpox. Some peoples adopted a nomadic lifestyle, using feral and then re-tamed horses. The cities were abandoned and fell into disrepair. Modern cities along the Mississippi include Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Davenport, Saint Louis, Memphis, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans.
Mosaic is an art form in which a large image is created from a large number of small colored stones (tesserae) that are cemented into a floor or wall. Glass can be used to create a stained-glass mosaic. In Greek and Roman times, mosaics were made in luxurious villas, depicting emperors, gods, or everyday scenes. Mosaics have been discovered in various locations in Europe and are well-preserved to this day. The Cosmatesque technique, which involved the inlay of geometric figures in a sophisticated way, emerged from the Middle Ages. Mosaics were discovered as early as the second half of the third millennium BC in Abra, Mesopotamia. These mosaics consisted of various pieces of colored stone, shells, and ivory. The first glazed mosaic tiles were discovered around 1500 BC. Furthermore, various eras and empires influenced the development of mosaic art. The Greeks were enthusiasts of mosaic art. The Greek style developed primarily in the third century BC. The subjects of these artworks were primarily mythological creatures, religious figures, wealth, and nature. During this period, painting, as well as sculpture, were more popular than mosaic art. Consequently, many mosaic artworks are based on or inspired by paintings.
