Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon. The term "steel" is used primarily for iron alloys with such a limited carbon content (typically less than 1.9%) or additives such as chromium that they can be hot-worked. This distinguishes steel from, for example, cast iron, which has a higher carbon content. There are many different alloys containing these two elements, usually with other components as well, so there are also many types of steel. Due to the wide selection and its excellent machinability, it is a widely used construction material. Carbon is used to achieve high tensile strength and hardness. Approximately 1600 million tons of steel are produced annually worldwide.
