Description
A gift, present, or gift is something given to someone. Gifts are often given to enhance a congratulation, for example, on a birthday. Gifts are often wrapped in specially designed wrapping paper to heighten curiosity about what's inside. Not every culture handles receiving gifts the same way. In Suriname, for example, it's customary not to unwrap a gift immediately after receiving it, so as not to offend the giver if it's not appreciated. Similarly, it's taboo to give soap as a gift, to avoid the suggestion that the recipient might smell. In Japan, many gifts are given never to be unwrapped, but only to be passed on. The giver often doesn't know what they're giving because they only recently received it and, of course, haven't unwrapped it. These are usually not birthday gifts, but presents for business associates. In Switzerland, people will do their utmost not to tear the wrapping paper during unwrapping to avoid appearing greedy. Besides material gifts (given to someone), there are also immaterial gifts. For example, a former patient might experience their recovery as a gift, or someone might experience the reunion with someone they haven't seen and missed for a long time as a gift.
