Gaea. In Greek mythology, Gaea or Gaia is the Greek goddess who personifies the earth, the primordial mother. She emerged from the primordial chaos. She united with the sky (Uranus), and together they formed the first divine couple. "Gaea or Gaia is the Greek goddess of the earth." From this union were born the Titans and the Cyclopes. Gaea's motherly love is central to the myths; for example, she incited her sons (the Titans) to rebel against their father, Uranus. Cronus, the youngest of the Titans, assumed leadership and castrated his father, Uranus. With this act, crime and violence entered the world. An oracle was pronounced against Cronus that one of his own sons would also overthrow him, a feat ultimately carried out by Zeus.
