The Happy Buddha is also known as the Laughing Buddha, Fat-Belly Buddha, Chinese Buddha, or Lucky Buddha. The Happy Buddha was a Chinese sage who bore the nickname “Poe-Tai Ho-Shang.” After his death, he was revered as a folk hero and regarded as a bringer of good fortune.
The Happy Buddha is often depicted as a bald man with a large belly and a cheerful laugh. His long earlobes indicate that he is of noble birth.
The attributes he carries or wears are very diverse and symbolic, including:
– Bead necklace: Buddhist prayer beads
– Gold nugget: symbol of financial good fortune
– Sack: symbol of searching and traveling
– Yoke: represents balance
– Cloak: offers protection
The story goes that if you place the Happy Buddha in a room facing the door, everyone entering the room is wished good fortune and a warm welcome.
