Description
Garnierite is a common name for a green nickel ore found in pockets and veins within weathered and convoluted ultramafic rocks. It forms by lateritic weathering of ultramafic rocks and occurs in many nickel laterite deposits worldwide. The rock fragments found in laterite-weathered soil clusters strongly indicate that they contain either residual weathering products or weathering debris from the Cretaceous Ultra Base/Ophiolite source rock, approximately 63-138 million years old, and are also particularly nickeliferous. These rock formations are widely exposed in the Kendari and Morowali districts of Indonesia.
