Description
The mineral strontianite is a strontium carbonate with the chemical formula SrCO3. The transparent to translucent colorless, gray, yellowish, or greenish strontianite has a vitreous luster, a white streak color, and good cleavage along the crystal plane [110]. The crystal system is orthorhombic. Strontianite has an average density of 3.78, a hardness of 3.5 or 2.54 g/cm3, and is not radioactive, except for 16 different isotopes, including the 90 isotope of strontium. The mineral's name strontianite is derived from the Scottish locality of Strontian, where it was first described and named after the element strontium. Strontianite is a mineral that forms in pegmatites and limestones. The type locality is located in Strontian, Scotland. It is also found in Lime City, Wood County, Ohio, United States.
