Description
The mineral petalite is a lithium-aluminum-tectosilicate with the chemical formula LiAlSi4O10. It belongs to the group of feldspars. The colorless, gray, or yellowish-white mineral has a monoclinic crystal system and perfect cleavage. The average density is 2.42 and the hardness is 6 to 6.5. Petalite is neither radioactive nor magnetic.
The name of the mineral petalite is derived from the Greek word petalon, meaning “leaf.” It was so named because of its cleavage, which resembled leaves. Like many lithium-containing minerals, petalite can often be found in granitic pegmatites. The type locality is the Mining Academy in Freiberg, Germany. Petalite is a protective stone used in numerous spiritual activities. It is a good support for shamanism and astral travel because Petalite strengthens visions, helps ground one, and protects.
