What are Yooperlites? Recently discovered by Erik Rintamaki, Yooperlite rocks are actually syenite rocks rich in fluorescent sodalite. In 2017, Erik went to a beach in Lake Superior, Michigan, with a UV lamp and discovered dozens of these glowing rocks. To the naked eye, they look like gray rocks, but under UV light, the mineral composite makes the rocks glow. From humble beginnings, Yooperlites®, also called Druid stones, have now become an internet and news phenomenon and have been featured on television and news sites around the world. Erik wants people of all ages to learn more about Yooperlites and other Yooperlite rocks. Yooperlite rocks are actually syenitic rocks rich in fluorescent sodalite. Syenite looks very similar to granite. The rocks exhibit the same colors, and they also do not differ in grain size and structure. Syenite is a medium- to coarse-grained igneous deep rock that contains little or no quartz. It consists of potassium feldspar: plagioclase. Sodalite belongs to the feldspar substitution class, which makes it extremely special that the sodalite is present in the syenite. Yooperlite is the trade name; some also call it Glowing Stone. These are a sodalite-rich syenite, and the sodalite in its current form is also responsible for the "glow." We also call the stone a Shamen or Druid Stone, because we have clients who work with it very, very successfully in a shamanic way... it is precisely the connection to the earth and the mysterious gaze these stones offer that so appeal to people.
