Description
The mineral uvarovite is a calcium-chromium nesosilicate with the chemical formula Ca3Cr2(SiO4)3. It belongs to the garnets. Green uvarovite has a white streak color, a vitreous luster, and no cleavage. The average density is 3.59 and the hardness is 6.5 to 7.5. The crystal system is isometric and the mineral is not radioactive. Uvarovite is named after the Russian count and mineral collector SS Uvarov (1765–1855). Like other members of the garnet group, uvarovite occurs primarily in metamorphic or mantle rock. It is also formed in chromite deposits. The type locality is in the Central Urals.
