The mineral celestite, or coelestine, is a strontium sulfate with the chemical formula SrSO4. Celestite occurs as individual crystals as well as in compact, massive, and fibrous forms. Its hardness is 3 and its average density is 3.95. It is not radioactive. The mineral is named after the Latin word caelestinus, meaning "heavenly." It is primarily found in sedimentary rocks and in evaporites, occurring together with the minerals gypsum, anhydrite, and halite. The mineral is found worldwide, usually in small quantities. Faint blue crystals are found in the Sakoany Mine, Vallée de la Sofia, Mahajanga Province, Madagascar. In the Netherlands, celestite is found in the quarries around Winterswijk.
