Description
Zion National Park is a nature reserve in the United States. It became a National Monument in 1909, a National Park in 1919, and was expanded in 1937 to include Kolob. The park was given the name 'Zion' by Mormon pioneers in 1860. The Mormons, or "Latter-day Saints of Jesus Christ," are a religion primarily based in Utah. Derived from the biblical 'Zion,' it came to mean a place of peace and safety for them. The name Kolob also comes from their writings; it means: the first creation, a place close to God. Around the beginning of the Christian era, the Anasazi, or ancient Pueblo peoples, lived here until about 1200. Then the Paiute tribe lived here until the arrival of the Mormon pioneers. Aragonite is found in geysers, hot springs, caves, as oolites in shallow seas, in shells, and in pearls.
