One of the oldest handcrafted products we know of, dating back to the ancient Inca period in Peru, are the fantastically beautiful, hand-carved aragonite creatures. Aragonite comes in many stunning shades and is relatively easy for the locals to carve. Because of the beautiful patterns in the aragonite, no two creatures are alike. Most of the figurines come from Cuzco in central Peru. This is easily explained because this area (Pachatusan and Nevado Auzangate mountain ranges) is where the most aragonite is found. The proceeds from these works of art help children attend school and villages become self-sufficient, reducing poverty among the local population. Even today, it's not easy to bring the aragonite creatures to the Netherlands because transport in Peru is very difficult and dangerous. Everything has to be transported by foot to the capital, Lima, and it takes days of walking to reach the capital. Aragonite is known for its therapeutic properties, and people sometimes place a creature under their pillow before going to sleep.
