Romania is a republic in Southeastern Europe, bordering the Black Sea, Bulgaria, Serbia, Ukraine, Hungary, and Moldova. Except for the latter two, Romance Romania is surrounded by Slavic countries. The country boasts many cultures, languages, and religions that have been mutually influenced. The continental climate (cold winters and warm summers) and the Carpathian Mountains create diverse landscapes with unspoiled nature, primeval forests, and plains. The Black Sea boasts wide sandy beaches and a river delta. With a territory of 238,391 km², Romania has 21,302,893 inhabitants (2020). The capital, Bucharest—known as Little Paris during the interwar period—is Romania's main city and a tourist attraction. During the Soviet era, Romania held a distinct position within the Eastern Bloc and enjoyed a relatively independent foreign policy.
