In the Timmersgems webshop, we sell high-quality sweetgrass directly from the Sioux reservations in the US. Sweetgrass is very important to the Sioux and Cherokee tribes; its botanical name is Hierochloë asperula odorata. In these tribes, sweetgrass is braided like hair braids. It can be burned by lighting the ends or (more economically) by placing pieces of cut grass on charcoal in a fire pit or shell. Use good quality wood, not charcoal pellets. Sweetgrass is burned after a ceremony with sage, bringing good influences after the bad ones have been driven away. Sweetgrass is rare these days, and traditional people try to protect it. I believe cedar, which is not endangered, can be used safely. Piñon pine needles (more commonly used by the Southwestern Teneh, as well as the Navajo and Apache, as well as the Pueblo people and the Zuni) and copal resin (used by the Yaqui and, in ancient times, by the Azteca and Maya) can also have the same effect. The three mentioned here are available for self-collection or, in the case of copal resin, from a reputable shop like Timmersgems. Smudging (smoking) should be done carefully, with reverence, and with LOVE. Show your respect and honor for the plants that have given us meaning for our healing, and they will return their love by being good to us and freeing us from illness and negative energy. Aloe vera plants are good for purification (not to be burned). Keep one or more potted aloe vera plants in your home and you can relax indoors (modern varieties should only be kept in full shade outdoors) in organic pots (wooden or ceramic pots, never plastic or metal). Our sweetgrass is of excellent quality and burns for a long time with a fantastic natural fragrance. The best way to use sweetgrass is in an Aloe shell.
SACRED CEDAR SMOKE BUNDLE (WHAT AND HOW TO USE IT) Cedar is burned during silent or vocal prayers. The prayers are carried to the creator on the cedar smoke. Cedar is also spread with sage on the sweat lodge floors of some tribes. By waving burning cedar, people purify the house during a special house blessing ceremony in many Northwest Indian nations. In the Northwest, people burn cedar for purification, just like sage. It dispels negative energy and brings positive influences. The spirit of cedar is considered very ancient and wise. Old fallen cedar trees are honored with offerings and prayers.
SMOKE BUNDLE (WHAT AND HOW TO USE)
**White sage from California is used in many cleansing ceremonies in, among others, the ancient Mayan culture, but also in contemporary Shamanic, Wicca, Angelic, and Native American cultures. **Sage bundles should be lit over a Paua/Abalone shell covered with sand; gently blow on the burning sage to produce smoke. When you are finished, extinguish the bundle by sticking it into the sand. This is also the best way to store it. **The sage is 100% natural. This bundle was harvested in an ecological environment in a respectful manner. The plants are not damaged and nothing is wasted. Children should use this bundle under parental supervision.
