Description
A candle snuffer (also called a candle stick or damper) is a device used to extinguish a candle flame. It usually consists of a conical metal cap on a stem, sometimes bell-shaped or even a hemisphere. Holding the cap close to the flame extinguishes it by creating a lack of oxygen. Many candle snuffers have special, fanciful designs, even in the form of busts, animals, and various materials. Porcelain snuffers usually have no stem; instead, the snuffers themselves are held. One might wonder whether they are more of a trinket, given the considerable heat generation and soot formation that make it impossible to use them for multiple candles, or the soot that spoils the object. The material of the product is often copper or bronze.
