Nag Champa is one of the most well-known fragrance types of Indian incense. Varieties containing Plumeria, known in the West as Frangipani, have Champa in their name. Champa is the yellow flower of the Champac (or Champaka) tree, which is used to give this type of incense its characteristic aroma. Champa incense contains a semi-liquid resin, "halmaddi," (halmaddi is hygroscopic) from the Ailanthus Malabarica tree, which gives it its characteristic gray color and moist texture. There is a place called Chamba, in the district of the same name located in the western Himalayas. This place, formerly known as Champa, where many Champaka trees grow, was guarded by the goddess Champavati (better known as Chameshni). The name Champa may derive from this. Nag literally means "cobra" in India.
