More information

Butterflies  (Lepidoptera) are a group of winged insects. The order of the butterflies after that of the beetles, the largest among the animals: there are about 160,000 described species. Butterflies live in diverse habitats: from cold tundra to desert areas. Most species live in tropical or subtropical areas. Unlike most insects are butterflies loved by the general public. Many adult butterflies have striking looks and can moreover not stabbing or bite. They play a role in different cultures and are a common theme in art. Butterflies often have a characteristic and very different flight flapping wing colors that are considered to be decorative in a number of species. Because the body is easy to preserve and sometimes bright colors are not lost hereby be butterflies have long been collected all over the world. The larvae of butterflies are called caterpillars. The caterpillars of some butterflies can cause by their gluttony great damage to crops. Other types can cause allergic reactions in people by their hair on fire conditioned skin. The caterpillars of butterflies have a high ecological value because they are eaten by many higher animals. For example, caterpillars are a major food source for many birds. Butterflies have almost all the same physique but have a wide variation in the size and shape of the wings, the wing colors and patterns often differ by species. The caterpillars also have a huge variety of forms and are often easy to distinguish from each other. Many butterflies are easily recognized as such, but there are exceptions. Thus there are wingless species and there are species that do not have the characteristic butterfly proboscis. Known butterflies are the peacock, the Comma butterfly, the cabbage white, the doodshoofdvlinder, the monarch butterfly and the swallowtail.

Nearly all butterflies are easily recognizable as such. Because both within the butterflies as in other insect groups is a huge variety of shapes, there sometimes can be misleading. Some animals resemble butterflies while some butterflies resemble other insects. This may reflect a different physique, abnormal hair growth or unusual colors, but mostly it's just the combination of these. The species Megalopyge opercularis has the rear wings folded at rest, the strong body hair and orange, white and black colors more like a bumblebee than a butterfly. Some feather moths seems most like a crane fly, but this is only an accidental resemblance. Butterflies can, especially in flight are most easily confused with grootvleugelige insects like mayflies, caddis flies and ants lions. In particular, the vlinderhaft (picture below) is easy to confuse with a butterfly through the big yellow wings, hairy body and especially the club-shaped antenna breaks. Sometimes, however, the similarity is no coincidence; butterflies that are easily confused with wasps and gnats take advantage of the fact that stinging insects are avoided by attackers. Such outward similarity is called mimicry, see also under camouflage and mimicry.
