The name alabaster is used for manifestations of two different minerals: gypsum and calcite (or selenite). The hardness of the two variants is a significant difference. Gypsum Alabaster is so soft that it can be easily scratched with a fingernail (hardness 1.5 to 2). Lime Alabaster resists finger nails, but can be scratched with a knife (hardness 3). Lime Alabaster is a yellowish white, quite hard marble. It is also called oriental alabaster because it was already edited in ancient times in the Middle East. Another name is onyxmarmer because the banned structure recalls onyx. The Greek alabastrites name probably derives from the city Alabastron, in Egypt, where the stone was mined, but it is also possible that the city was named after the stone. It is also suggested that the name comes from the Arabic. The oriental alabaster was widely used to make perfume and ointment bottles. Moreover, Egyptian canopic vases were often made of alabaster. Gypsum Alabaster (or selenite) is a translucent stone type which is composed of not completely crystallized gypsum and is found in tubers. The sites include England, Italy, Spain and Egypt. On the outside exhibit the alabaster tubers often irregularities. Clay waste and share earth are here for part of the stone. This pollution is characteristic of alabaster and gives the stone partly why its charm. Today gypsum alabaster still used for the production of art and objects.
